One day in Tulsa in 2015, I got a frightening letter from the IRS.
I held the letter in my hands and stared at it. There, stamped at the top was that intimidating IRS logo, and as I read on, the letter was delivering bad news. I had failed to file form 941 for quarter 4 of last tax season. I didn't even know what that meant.After 18 years as a music minister and owner of a music production business, I still didn't fully understand how to manage my company's books and taxes, and here I was feeling at the mercy of the IRS with my ignorance in full view.I was fed up. I said to myself, "never again."
I spent the next 5 months ingesting so much information from the IRS tax code that it would make your head explode - if you're not into that sort of thing.
But strangely, I was. I was completely into it.That year, I designed my own bookkeeping system from the ground up, as one giant, ultra-complex Excel Spreadsheet, designed to record every transaction into and out of my business and calculate my quarterly tax liability transaction-by-transaction and down-to-the penny. I called it "Crackbooks," because it contained features that "QuickBooks Self-Employed" just didn't have.When I filed my taxes at the end of that year, I had predicted my tax liability perfectly. My tax due was "0.00 dollars," after having paid perfectly calculated estimated quarterly payments.It was so satisfying that I began pursuing my education in accounting, picking up 9 certifications and counting. Then, I went to work in the corporate world, taking a job in the accounting department of an automotive group, managing payroll for three auto dealerships.But, what I really wanted was to come to the rescue of small business owners, giving them the peace of mind I had gained in my own business.That's how Upper Level Bookkeeping was born.
When I'm not working...
I've been a professional musician and minister for 26 years. I play in two acoustic duos, produce artists in my studio, and play as a guest musician for three churches.I love deep conversations with friends at the coffee shop here in Bartlesville, the city I grew up in. I live here to be near family: Mom & Dad, my two sisters, one brother-in-law, one genius niece, and four chihuahuas.And I love all things that point to God by inspiring awe and wonder: Striking sunsets, moments of empathy, and movies and real-life stories about overcoming.
